Crown Lands Agreement, Public Debate, February 2014 - present

On August 14, 2018, the Department of Energy and Resource Development released a "Review of the 2014 Forest Management Strategy." The document and responses from environmental groups are below.

On March 12th, 2014, the government announced a reduction in Crown forest set aside for conservation to 23%, a decrease of 8% from the 31% set aside before 2012. Government also increased the annual allowable cut of softwood for the industry by 21%. Opposition was swift, and open letters, comments, and interviews followed. Scientists have been outspoken about the problems with the plan. Opposition was also found among former Ministers of Natural Resources. Former Liberal minister, Morris Green, and former Progressive Conservative Minister, Jeannot Volpe, signed an open letter calling on the government to drop its forest plan. Broad public concern about the deal continues.
