Featured Group: Petitcodiac Riverkeeper

Mission
To lead in the restoration, protection and promotion of the ecological integrity of the Petitcodiac and Memramcook watersheds and the Shepody Bay estuary, situated in southeastern New Brunswick and the Bay of Fundy.
We accomplish this by engaging in public education, promoting the rivers’ cultural heritage, social and economic values of our waterways, patrolling and monitoring the watershed, undertaking actions to enforce compliance with environmental laws and initiating watercourse rehabilitation projects.
We are part of a powerful movement, the Waterkeeper Alliance, championing clean water, protecting ecosystems and providing a voice for waterways and their communities worldwide.
Successes
We have raised public awareness about our main legal challenge, the 40-year old environmental battle for the removal of the Petitcodiac causeway and the restoration of fish passage and full tidal flow of the river. On April 14, 2010, the gates of the causeway were opened as part of a major river restoration project that will see the causeway replaced by a partial bridge, allowing free flow once again on the mighty Petitcodiac River.
We also brought polluters to justice, filed complaints and followed through on possible infractions of the Federal Fisheries Act and provincial environment Acts and Regulations.
